Trust Yourself by Listening to Your Feelings

Many people will tell you not to trust your feelings. They warn that emotions are “all over the place,” especially the negative ones, so you should ignore them. I believe the opposite is true. Your feelings are the gateway to trusting yourself more deeply.

Why We Misunderstand Negative Emotions

When we dismiss emotions like anger, sadness, or anxiety, we lose an important source of guidance.

  • Positive emotions show that your beliefs align with your desires and the truth of who you are.
  • Negative emotions reveal hidden, often subconscious, beliefs that pull you away from your truth.

Ignoring those signals may bring short-term relief, but it keeps you from uncovering the deeper issues that hold you back.

A Personal Example

journalRecently, I felt strongly encouraged to take a day off to rest, journal, and spend time in nature. That felt right—until guilt swept in: “It’s Tuesday. You should be working.”

Because I understand emotional empowerment, I recognized guilt as a helpful sign. It showed me that part of me still clung to an outdated belief that worthiness comes only from constant work. Ninety percent of me knew better, but that lingering 10 percent needed attention.

With that awareness, I could choose:

  • follow the old pattern of pushing harder, or
  • trust my inner guidance and rest.

Each time I choose what truly feels right, life expands in ways that bring more joy and fulfillment.

Turning Feelings into Guidance

When emotions dip, don’t push them away. Ask:

  • What belief is this feeling pointing to?
  • Is it taking me away from my truth?

The more you practice, the more natural it becomes to trust yourself. Your emotions, both pleasant and uncomfortable, will lead you toward the life you desire.
